Brief History of Newport Rhode Island

Established in 1639
Incorporated in 1784

Settled in 1639 an incorporated in 1784, Newport is one of the five mostimportant settlements in the 13 colonies, sharing that distinction withBoston, New York, Philadelphia and Charlestown.

The city was founded as a haven for complete religious and politicalfreedom and from the outset, Quaker and Jewish settlers livedharmoniously here. By the early 1700’s, commerce combined with asuccessful farming and fishing industry, bringing great wealth toNewport. In the 1720’s Newport ships transported wealthy passengers herefrom the Carolinas and the Caribbean, to get away from the heat, fever, and humidity of their plantations.

Newport was also the birthplace of the Navy, and the constant flow ofprivate and naval shipping from around the world added to the City’scosmopolitan atmosphere. Today, the US Navy, which still maintainstraining facilities here, works in harmony with the year round communityand the summer residents to produce several international cultural eventssuch as music, art and film festivals. The city also claims some of themost magnificent pre-1830’s architecture in the world including theluxurious “summer cottages of the Vanderbilts, the Astors and theBelmonts. Many are open to the public.

Brief History of Rhode Island
Roger Williams and a group of religious followers founded the town ofProvidence in what is today known as Rhode Island after their banishmentfrom the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Williams believed in the importance ofliberty of conscience, which became an important principle in thefounding of Rhode Island and ultimately in the founding of the UnitedStates. Officially called "The State of Rhode Island and ProvidencePlantations," Rhode Island is one of the six New England states and oneof the original 13 states of the Union, entering in 1790. It is thesmallest state in area in the country. Rhode Island's flower is theviolet, and the capital is Providence. The exact origin of the state nameis unknown.

Brief History of Massachusetts
One of the six New England states, and one of the first 13 states in theUnion (it entered in 1788), Massachusetts is known as the "Old ColonyState." The Pilgrims established their settlement at Plymouth in 1620,arriving on the Mayflower. They were followed shortly by the Puritans, who established the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The Puritans named theircolony after a local Indian tribe whose name means "a large hill place."The birthplace of many of the ideals of the American Revolution,Massachusetts attracted people who believed in self-government. It'sappropriate that the state flower is the mayflower, also known as thetrailing arbutus."

Dear David:

I found the original Newport vital record of the Jonathan Springer - AnnPerkins marriage and birth of their son John. Allow me to relate it toyou:

Jonathan Springer was married to Ann Perkins by Rev. James Honyman atTrinity Church on 25 October 1729 (Trinity parish records, book 0 2097NHS). The marriage was entered into the Newport Vital Records on 18 May1747 by William Coddington, clerk. (Newport (colonial) Vital Records 2:56NHS). Immediately under the marriage record, bearing the same recordingdate of 18 May 1747, is the birth of John Springer on 20 July 173(2?),son of Jonathan and Ann Springer. The date is intact although badlystained, definately 173-, looks like 1732. Immediately under this birthrecord is the marriage of Ann Springer and Peter Vroom, 1738.

The Trinity baptism record of both John and Jonathan Springer on 20October 1737 does suggest they were brothers, but not twins, otherwiseJonathan would have been included in the aforementioned town birth record.

John Springer of Newport and Bristol, husband of Martha Ingraham, died inBristol on 27 May 1813, "age 85 or 86". (VRRI 5:164). This results in acalculated birth year of 1728 or 1727. His death notice in the RhodeIsland Republican of 3 June 1813, p. 3, gives his age as 88, resulting ina calculated birth year of 1725. His gravestone in Bristol states his ageas 88 (Oscar Stetson cemetery inscriptions of Bristol, typescript NHS).This later birth date of 1725 is far enough off from 1730-1732 to suggestJohn of Bristol is not the same as the child of Jonathan and Ann Perkinsof Trinity Church. Just my opinion.

There was an Edward Springer, wheelwright, of Newport married to DesireGorham. They did not have any surviving children. (John Howland of theMayflower by Elizabeth Pearson White [1990] Vol. 1 pages 71, 72). Edwardwas the only Springer included in the land records of Newport.

My next project is to chase Jonathan and Ann out of Newport and find herancestors. If your ancestors somehow descend from Lawrence Springer ofLittle Compton, then how and why would they be members of the Church ofEngland at a time and place that was still rather hostile to theestablished church? More to come...

Sincerely,

Bert Lippincott III,
Librarian

He was a king and affectionate husband, an indulgent fatherand an exemplary Christian; and died in the full hope of a blessedimmortality. He has left a large circle of connections and friends tomourn his loss.

"Hear what the voice from heaven declares.
To those in Christ who die!
'Relieved from all their earthly cares,
They reign with him on high.'
Then why lament departed friends,
Or shake at death alarms!
Death's but the servant Jesus sends
To call us to his arms."

Obituary-Joseph Springer Jan 6,1879

Fall River Daily Evening News, Mon.,Jan 6,1879 p.2;c.2

"Mr. Joseph Springer, who was terribly hurt by falling from the house ofJohn Wilbur, in Barnaby Street about the middle of November, and had beena constant sufferer ever since, died this forenoon, aged 68 years. Mr.Springer was born in Bristol, R.I., learned the carpenter's trade whenyoung and he worked at it over 40 years, 29 of which have been passed inthis city. He has been a useful and industrious citizen and noblyfulfilled his duty while in life.
Connecting himself with the St. Paul's M.E. Church, on Bank Street, manyyears ago, he has gone thru life as one who forgot not the things unseenand eternal, and left behind a memory that is pleasant to his brethren ofthe church and the large family he leaves behind him, consisting of awidow, five sons and three daughters, who revere his memory and mourn hisloss. They all know where to look for consolation, and as the days go bywill forget not the example he has left for their profit, not forgettingthat in the Father's house are many mansions prepared for the blest.

----------------------------
Founded in 1639, Newport's first residents were settlers seekingreligious freedom. The area was soon recognized for its ideal tradelocation and quickly developed into one of the major seaports on the eastcoast. Beautiful schooners and trade ships billowed into the harbor, crowding the wooden docks and bringing exotic treasures.

Ironically, this haven of religious tolerance became a key point of theinfamous Triangle Trade. So called because of the triangular route takento reach the three main shipping ports, the industry was an extension ofthe slave trade. African slaves were traded for West Indian sugar andmolasses. These in turn were made into Newport rum and traded for slaves.During this time pineapples first found their way into Newport homes. Nowthe city's symbol of hospitality, pineapples were originally brought hereby Newport sea captains after trips to the West Indies. A pineapple wasplaced in front of the voyagers' home to indicate to neighbors andfriends that his door was open to visitors.

Newport's era as a seaport diminished with the British occupation of1776. British ships blockaded the harbor, and residents were forced touse the city's timber wharves for firewood during the brutally coldwinter.

However, Newport was rediscovered in the 1800's by the country's wealthycitizens as the ideal location to spend their summers. Suddenly, elaborate mansions and villas sprung up along Bellevue Avenue and OceanDrive - each more ornate and luxurious than the one next door. These"summer cottages" provided the perfect backdrop for ‘The 400,' an elitegroup of the very rich. This extravagant era officially opened the doorto America's first resort.

Hi--I can't offer any help on the Springer line you seek information
about--there you have helped me. But, I've been working the Vickery families
of southeast MA and RI. I have only circumstantial evidence that Mary Vickery
was part of the only known Vickery family in Bristol which, I believe, has
its origins in Dighton, MA. The known Bristol males, Samuel, Reuben and
Isaiah all applied for seaman's protection certificates. Each of them gives
their place of residence at the time of application as Dighton, MA.Further,
Isaiah who applies in Newport has someone confirm that he is the known son of
John Vickery. Reuben says he is the son of John and Hannah. Reuben and
Samuel together sell property in Bristol.

There are no birth records for any of them (or any children of John and
Hannah Vickery of Dighton). But, census records of 1790 list children for
John Vickery of Dighton. Reuben's middle name is Clement--his mother's
(Hannah) maiden name is Clemmons.

I am inclined to include Mary in the family solely because there are no other
Vickerys in Bristol but this bunch and all of John Vickery's children go
unnamed.

A census facsimile for Coventry RI (1800) on rootsweb lists both a John Vicry
and a John Vicry, Jr as residents. Dighton town meeting records (tax
assessments) also record both a John and a John, Jr. in 1787. John, Sen.was
a revolutionary war veteran who removed to Caroline, NY after 1810 when he
last appears on the Dighton census.

I'm still looking for the proper documentation, but I thought I'd share what
I've done so far and offer the suggestion that Mary is part of this cluster.
The line from John goes to Hull: John4, Robert3, Benjamin2, George1.

Dave,

First off, I also have the reference from Arnold's that Mary Vickery is
daughter of Joseph and Susanna of Newport. But, there is a point of confusion
that arises from the Bristol death records (5:32) which states that Mary
Springer died in 1860 at 74 which would give her birth as 1786 rather than
1789. Also, it says she is the daughter of Reuben and Mary Vickery of Fall
River. I haven't a clue who that is. But it certainly isn't Reuben Vickery
from Dighton.

So, I don't know how to resolve the "multiple" Mary references.

Also, Thomas Vickars (possibly an earlier version of Vickery) was a sexton at Trinity Church 1749, 1752 and 1753.

As for Seaman's Protection Certificates, they were required of mariner safter 1798 to protect citizens against imprisonments by the British navy. They were filed with custom houses at local ports. Some have been preserved, some are lost. I found three sources: RI Historical Society (abound index downstairs,
original documents upstairs), Newport Historical Society (as custom house records) and NARA in Waltham. RI and NARA also have ships' crew lists, and some Vickerys are found there. The crew lists give age and sometimes a place of origin; the protection certificates give age, place of birth and a physical description.

I'll include some of the reconstructions with citations of sources that I have worked on. Maybe you can work out the Melville/Ingraham connections to Springers.

George

Moreover, there is a Hugh Vickery of record in Scituate and Hanover with no known connection to the George Vickery family. He first appears in the record via a deed of purchase in 1721 (Plymouth Co. Registry of Deeds,Bk. 15, p. 207) when "Hugh Vicory, wool-comber" buys 10 acres from Amos Perry identified as "lot number 39" formerly owned by Ebenezer Kent of Hingham with a house built by David Bryant. Christ Church records of Boston record the baptism of his first known child, April 13, 1726/7"Viccory, Mary, Daughter of Hugh & Mary at Scituate" (NEHGR, V. 99, p. 26).The baptisms of two subsequent children, 1732, "Thomas the son & Hannah the dau. of Hugh Vicary by Mary his wife" are
among the records of Christ Church of Braintree/Quincy (MD, V. 35, p.38). The History of Hanover (Bicentennial Edition, 1975, p. 18) names him as a "tything man" for the town in 1727 and Plymouth Co. deeds (Bk. 24,p. 71/2) identify him as "worsted-comber, now of Hanover, formerly of Scituate", March
10, 1728 in a sale of property to Thomas Barker which he had formerly purchased plus an additional acre he purchased of Jonah Stetson(transaction recorded Oct. 7, 1729). The next record we find (MD, V. 23,p. 176) names him as among those who owed debts to the estate of Joseph Sampson of Dartmouth in 1738 where he may have removed after selling his lands in Hanover.

No record confirms his residence after 1729, but he may have relocated through Dartmouth to Newport. Of particular relevance are the records of the Trinity Church in Newport which report the marriages of several Vickerys but with no record of a prior birth in Newport:

Mary Vickery m. (1749) Johnathan Weeden ( -1795)
Hannah Vickery m. (1749) Thomas Ash
Thomas Vickery m. (1750) Abigail Melville (1733- )

These are precisely the names of the known children of Hugh Vickery baptized between 1726 and 1732. The fact that Thomas and Hannah were baptized together suggests either that they were twins or that the baptism was delayed and does not reflect the dates of birth.Interestingly, the only other place the name
Hugh Vickery shows up is in Newport for a child born 1773 to Joseph(1722-1818) and Mercy (Lindsey) Vickery (1739-1816). A family Bible(Newport Historical Society) contains the names of their children. One other Joseph Vickery is a resident of record in Newport identified by his marriage (1741) to Ann Young and probate records which name his wife administratrix of his estate, 1754. To bring the connections through Hugh Vickery one step closer, Abigail Melville is named in her uncle's will(David Melville, Bristol Co. Probate,V. 13, pp. 336-338). David, a peruke maker living in Dartmouth at the time of his death (1752), identifies his brother, Thomas as house carpenter of Newport and bequeaths a division of land to Thomas' children, among them Abigail Vicory. This establishes another connection between Dartmouth and Newport. [See attached Melvill Family.]

George C. Vickery, RI

We do not know the parents of George C. Vickery who appears in Coventry,RI. George Trim, the historian of Rehoboth, answered a letter inquiring about local Vickerys and replied with the information that George Vickery and Keziah were both buried in RI. This would imply that had some connection to the Rehoboth/Dighton Vickerys but nothing certain can be established. As the above discussion of John4 Vickery establishes, there are unaccounted for children from that generation. Thus, it is possible that Benjamin4, George4 or Samuel4 could have had children that have escaped the record just as those
for John4 had gone unnoticed until the present reconstruction from the seaman's protection evidence.

George C. Vickery (1794-1844) and Keziah (Potter) (1800-1876) d/o Peter &Almy (Stone) Potter.

Benjamin Vickery, RI

A genealogy of the [Andrews/Green] family in RI claims that the father of Benjamin is William Vickery of Dighton. As with the data above, there is no record of a William Vickery of Dighton unless it is the person uncovered as a child of John4 who removed first to Vermont and then to Caroline, NY with his brother George. But, as argued above, William could be an unnamed child of the brothers of John4.

i. Sarah F. (1846- ) m. (1866) Arthur H. Herman
ii. Abby J. (1848- ) m. (1870) William Andrews s/o John + Abby,Dartmouth

[Thomas F. Vickery is the son of Capt. Samuel Vickery of Bristol, RI. The relation is established by deeds and estate settlement in Bristol and from the obituary of his brother, Capt. Samuel J. Vickery of Bristol and later of Warwick, RI. Census of 1865 lists his occupation as grocer. A deed of sale 1877 from estate of Hazard Bush names many of this family:Sarah C. Vickery and Thomas F. Vickery sign the deed. Begins "We Abbie J.Topham, widow of William H. Topham of the city of New Bedford‚¬¦" later it says, "‚¬¦we William H. Topham, husband of Abbie J. Topham‚¬¦hereunto set our hands and seals‚¬¦".
Possibly Abby J., his daughter, remarried to William Topham. Thomas is named the executor of his brother's estate (Samuel J. Vickery) of Warwick.

Samuel Vickery, Newport/Fall River

Samuel is first on record in Newport, RI. The date of his birth coincides so well with the Samuel found in the Fall River records that we can presume they are the same person.

[Samuel's marriage is a matter of record in Newport, RI but there is no record of his birth. There are many unrecorded children in Newport, and he is probably from one of the families for whom we have little data. His origins are confirmed by the place of birth of his first daughter,Newport. He takes a second wife by 1870 when he and Almira are listed on the federal census, both born in RI and he working as a freight agent. He dies in the Alms House, 1875 according to deaths in MA Archives. Samuel B. [sic, the initial later appears as C.]Vickery, his son, is listed independently on the 1855 census as a Housewright living in a household headed by Catherine Leach (b. 1811) with Edward Lake (b. 1803), Elizabeth and Nancy Leonard and several other Vickerys. He probably married Mary A.[----] (b. 1835) and the youngest
children recorded, Mary A. (1848), Elivier (1850) and Harriet L. (1854)may be the children of Charles and Mary (Lake). A Mary I. Vickery (b.1828) is also a resident.]

Hi David - Thanks for making your database available on Rootsweb. I
research some Bristol, RI families and I believe that the individual you
have as Mary Agatha Veronia ROBIN is really TOBIN. She is the daughter
of Thomas TOBIN and Sarah McComb Tobin. Good luck with your research,
regards, Maryl
